Activities

Intentional Doodling

Don’t waste your time with aimless doodling, try intentional doodling instead! Doodling works the parietal and frontal lobes of the brain and puts your working memory to the test. To get the best mental workout, focus on creating new and innovative designs.  The first goal is to draw abstract designs only. Avoid drawing anything you can put a name to such as a heart, triangle, star or arrow.  Give yourself a time limit of five minutes and see how many novel doodles you can draw  (Restak, 2009, p. 123). Next, doodle different designs for the same symbol. For example, draw five distinctly different versions of a birdhouse, a cat or any other object you may want to draw.

Add your skills of observation. Try drawing the shapes on this page.

Recognize Common Logos

How well do you pay attention to detail?

Attention and focus are such important skills that your memory cannot work well without them. Paying attention enables the brain to select certain sensory information to the exclusion of everything else.  In other words, if you attend to something closely and carefully, you will be less likely to forget that information. See how you do with recognizing common logos we see every day.
